Solicitor in Wills team becomes latest fully accredited member of STEP

A Solicitor in Rothera Sharp’s Wills and Probate department has now been admitted as a fully accredited member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) after passing his final STEP exam.

James Briggs, based at the firm’s Lace Market branch, is the sixth member of the 18-strong wills team to become a fully qualified STEP member.

Lawyers who are members of STEP have specialist experience in assisting clients with drafting wills and trusts, including administering estates, acting as trustees and advising families on inheritance and succession planning.

James’s application for STEP membership is based on a combination of demonstrating he has two years’ specialist experience as well as completing a number of examined courses, including Administration of Estates, Administration of Trusts, Trust and Estate Accounting and Taxation for Trusts and Estates, each of which took around 4-6 months and culminated in a 3-hour written exam.

James said: “My main reason for doing the courses was to develop my subject knowledge.  These courses give detailed and focused teaching on the law and practice around the administration of trusts and estates, which has bolstered my confidence and ability in giving advice on a range of technical issues.”

As a Member of STEP James will be able to use the post-nominal initials “TEP” (short for “Trust and Estate Practitioner”).  Being a TEP is regarded within the industry as a mark of expertise, helping to assure professional contacts such as financial advisors and also clients of a practitioner’s qualifications and ability.

Rothera Sharp’s Wills and Probate department encourages all of its solicitors to become fully accredited STEP members to ensure consistency in the level of advice and services offered to our clients and currently has a number of lawyers who are affiliate members of STEP, working towards their full accreditation.
