Billy Shaw is a Trainee Solicitor currently in the family department. Billy started his Training Contract with us in September 2018 and is based in the Lace Market office.
Billy assists in all areas of family law, including divorce and finances, private children law and child care proceedings. Billy has assisted in several sensitive matters which have involved issues such as substance misuse and domestic violence.
Before joining Rothera Sharp, Billy was a youth worker in the Rotherham and Sheffield area. In this role, Billy worked with young people, families and the wider community to address issues such as drugs and alcohol misuse, deprivation and child sexual exploitation. Billy’s previous youth work experience has equipped him with a good level of knowledge and experience which stands him in good stead to deal with the issues that arise in many children law matters with a sympathetic and personable approach.
Billy also has a keen interest in the firm’s business development activities. Billy attends networking events on behalf of the firm and has a keen interest in building business links with other professionals within the Nottinghamshire area. Billy also sits on Rothera Sharp’s staff committee, social committee and has recently established the trainee committee. Billy has boardroom and business development experience through his non-executive directorship with JADE Youth & Community, a youth charity in South Yorkshire.
Billy takes great pride in his charitable work. During his time at university, Billy was heavily involved in a broad range of pro bono work with the Nottingham Law School Legal Advice Centre. Billy mainly represented clients in the Social Security tribunal, offering free advice and representation to some of the most vulnerable in our society. In recognition of his services, Billy was shortlisted for the LawWorks and Attorney General’s Pro Bono Awards “Best Contribution by an Individual Student” and was invited to the ceremony at the House of Commons. Billy also enjoys assisting with free legal advice clinics facilitated by Rothera Sharp including clinics in Cotgrave and Derby.
Qualifications and Experience
Billy graduated from Nottingham Trent University in 2017 with a first-class LLB degree. Billy has also achieved an LLM LPC at Distinction level from Nottingham Law School.
Billy has received several academic prizes and professional accolades including:
- the Nottinghamshire Law Society Presidents Cup, Winner, 2018;
- the Nottingham Law School, Deans Academic Excellence Scholarship, 2017;
- the Vice Chancellor’s Award, 2017;
- the Trent Law Prize for the best LLB results, 2017;
- the Richard Sutcliffe Mooting Prize, 2017;
- the Thomson Reuters Law Prize for best performing law student, 2016.
