Hollies Day Nurseries
Rothera Sharp’s Company and Commercial Associate Jason Waghorne was instructed by the owners of Hollies Day Nurseries in the asset purchase of their fourth site.
After establishing sites to the North of the city, in Sherwood and Arnold, and having used Rothera Sharp for the purchase of their Mapperley site in 2015, Becky and Andrew pike, the owners of Hollies Day Nurseries again instructed Jason Waghorne for the asset purchase of their fourth nursery this time located in West Bridgford, buying not only the property but also the business.
The couple had found a premises they liked which was already being used as a nursery and had a huge garden, lending itself perfectly to learning outdoors, an important aspect at Hollies.
Hollies differ from most other nurseries in that they take their inspiration from childcare in Scandinavia, which focuses on early child brain development and the impact of environment on the child. They also consider the best outcomes for the child, encouraging children to make choices but keeping them engaged all the time rather than disrupting play, and working on their resilience so they have the capabilities to be self-aware. As part of this the nursery frequently engages with parents so they have a better understanding of Hollies’ philosophy, as well as offering regular workshops for parents and staff training.
The nursery also provides Forest Schools, which embrace the outdoors as an inspirational learning environment and focus on the child’s learning needs rather than specific outcomes, which a lot of other nurseries have now started offering.
After taking on their first two nurseries from scratch, Becky and Andrew purchased their third premises in Mapperley as a going concern, and say they learnt a lot about what was important to them as buyers from the purchase of the Mapperley site, which they took into consideration before buying the West Bridgford site. They said “We did a lot more prep work before purchasing the Mapperley site than we did with this one, where it was a lot more straightforward and we were able to streamline what was important to us.”
Hollies opened the West Bridgford nursery in November 2017, and just weeks later received an “Outstanding” rating from Ofsted for their nursery located in Arnold.
Although the purchase of a fourth site has limited how hands-on Becky and Andrew can be between the four sites and resulted in the business being restructured, they would never say never if another location came up. “If it was the right property in the right location and had the right amount of space, we would certainly consider it” Andrew said.
