Rothera Sharp proud to support Dementia Friends initiative

Rothera Sharp is proud to be involved in Dementia Friends, an initiative run by the Alzheimer’s Society that encourages people to learn more about what it is like to live with dementia and the small ways in which they can help.

The purpose of the scheme is to tackle the stigma and lack of understanding around dementia by transforming the way in which people talk, think and act regarding the disease. Individuals can take part in the scheme by attending face-to-face Dementia Friends information sessions or watching online videos to learn more about dementia and the small ways they can help, from telling others about Dementia Friends to visiting someone they know who lives with dementia.

Dementia is the biggest killer in the 21st century and currently affects 850,000 people in the UK, with this figure predicted to increase to one million by 2021.

As a firm Rothera Sharp works with and supports many people who are living with dementia, and the probate department is regularly involved in events run by the Alzheimer’s Society. By signing up to the Dementia Friends scheme the firm is committed to becoming more aware of the affect that dementia can have on people, and the additional ways in which we can support those we work with who might live with the condition.

Jayne Smith, head of Rothera Sharp’s Wills and Probate department said: “I think it is beneficial to all of us to understand that dementia can affect people in  many different ways, and by signing up to the Dementia Friends scheme we are taking the first step towards us becoming a Dementia Friendly firm.”

Alongside becoming a Dementia Friend, people who take part in the initiative also have the opportunity to become a Dementia Champion, whereby they encourage others to make a positive difference to people living with dementia in their community by providing information about the impact dementia can have on a person, and ways they can help.

May 21st marks Dementia Action Week, in which organisations are encouraged to turn their awareness of dementia into action, by doing things no matter how big or small that help people affected by dementia.
