Rothera Sharp paralegal running marathon to save hearts

Rothera Sharp is supporting one of its paralegals who will be taking on the gruelling task of completing the London Landmarks half marathon next month.

Natalia Shuttlewood, a Conveyancing Paralegal based at the firm’s Beeston branch, will be running the marathon alongside her dad in aid of The Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals Charity, a specialist hospital treating people with complex heart and lung disease who cared for Natalia’s younger brother Jack, who was born with a rare and complex heart condition. By the age of five Jack had undergone three major open heart surgeries at The Royal Brompton Hospital in London, the first one when he was only two days old.

The operations carried out on Jack were complex and challenging even for the most experienced doctors and surgeons and he developed a number of post-operative complications. He suffered a cardiac arrest and developed a serious clot on his lungs. A surgeon came out in the middle of the night, still in his slippers to remove the clot and essentially to keep Jack alive. Natalia says “The care and treatment Jack received whilst at The Royal Brompton was absolutely first class and the surgeons, doctors and nurses at the hospital are amazing.”

Despite the complications, all of Jack’s operations were successful and even though he only has half of a ‘standard’ working heart, he is now able to enjoy his life to the full and participate in all the activities and opportunities available to him.

Karen Hayward, a partner at the Beeston branch says: “The firm is proud to support Natalia as she takes on this tough but rewarding challenge for a very deserving cause and we are happy to get behind any members of staff taking part in charity events that have a particular significance to them.”

The London Landmarks Marathon, which takes place on 25th March was launched in 2014 by baby charity Tommys but supports a number of charities, and has already raised £1.5 million.
