Associate becomes latest STEP accredited member in Wills team

An Associate Solicitor in Rothera Sharp’s Wills and Probate department has become the latest fully accredited member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).

Heather Parker, based at the firm’s Mapperley branch, is the fifth colleague in the 18-strong wills team to become a fully qualified STEP member.

Lawyers who are members of STEP specialise in inheritance and succession planning and assist clients with drafting wills and trusts, administering estates, acting as trustees and advising families on the best way to structure their finances to ensure compliance and preservation of assets for future generations. STEP members can also advise on making sure elderly relatives are cared for and supported; providing for someone after their partner has died whilst also protecting the interests of their children; helping clients to effectively support charitable causes; making sure a family business passes safely through generations; and advising families on different laws and tax changes relating to different countries if they have interests spread across the world.

Fully accredited STEP members are called Trust and Estate Practitioners (TEPs) and are bound by the Code of Professional Conduct and STEP’s Will Code. This can provide huge reassurance for our clients as many aspects of estate planning are not regulated, meaning for instance that anyone can write a will, regardless of training or expertise.

TEPs have proven qualifications and experience and are recognised as experts in their field, and by maintaining their membership with STEP they demonstrate significant commitment to their continued professional development in this specialist area. TEPs are required to develop knowledge and skills relevant to their role as a condition of their continued membership, which means that they will always be up to date with the latest legal, technical and regulatory developments that may have an impact on you and your situation.

Rothera Sharp’s Wills and Probate department also has a number of lawyers who are currently affiliate members of STEP, working towards their full accreditation. All team members are encouraged to become fully accredited STEP members to ensure consistency  in the level of advice and services offered to our clients.
